Prom, short for Promenade, is a long-standing tradition from high school, but in modern times has come to also be for younger years to celebrate.

As always, you should follow the three golden rules before all else; ticking these three boxes will ensure a better looking and more confident boy on his way into manhood.

 

For too long it has been the glorious time for parents, and not so glorious time for teens, to pose awkwardly in ill-fitting suits; this need not be the case any longer! Here’s our guide to the perfect prom attire.

You might be tempted to go all out for Prom, but here is the one rule (well 4th if you follow the first three, but that goes without saying) you should always stick to:

Keep it classic & keep it timeless!

You don’t want to dress your boy like he’s been swindled by a rental tux salesman, or been lathered in a relatives old mismatched pieces. You want to be going with classic colours, and depending on the formality of the day, even a tuxedo.

 

You should follow our Tuxedo guide to properly pull off a dinner jacket with real style. For a slightly less formal black tie optional event, you can just as easily pull off a muted colour suit with a white shirt. This is often a more affordable and useful option since this suit can be worn at weddings and other occasions while still being appropriate.

 

On matching the companion for the night, it’s better to go with a subtle nod to their outfit rather than a full blown matching combo, this tends to end up looking tacky. If, for example, the date is wearing a pale blue, a baby blue hanky would be appropriate to match them well.

 

This is always a big night in a young adult’s life, it marks the start of a new chapter in their life, and so should be treated as the momentous occasion it is.
