As we’re halfway through the year, parenting website BabyCentre has allowed us a sneak peak at the names that have topped the charts so far in 2019. The BabyCentre claim that the top 10 remain largely stable year on year. Holding on to their top spots, names Olivia and Sophia keep their respective Number 1and 2 positions, while the true trends are revealed with some surprising new entries in the top 100. Netflix and ChillDubbed “box-set” babies, there is a rise in names inspired by TV shows such as Game of Thrones, Love Island and Netflix favourites. The top 100 features names such as Penny inspired by Big Bang Theory, Maisie and Arya popular with Games of Thrones fans and names like Amber, Kem, Camillia and Marcel which are just our type on paper. 1980’s InspiredThe trend for classic names is attributed to the UK’s political turmoil as Brexit hangs in the balance, as parent’s opt for strong and stable names. However, with names such as Tommy, Ada, Arthur entering the charts, we have a sneaky suspicion the trend is also inspired by popular TV Show Peaky Blinders. Climate ConsciousBotanical names such as Willow and Ivy are in the top 20, with Robyn and Raven also climbing the charts. However, it is the name David that is the hot topic, with the name rising up 15 places to number 74 in the Top 100, credited to David Attenborough, who recently took to the stage at Glastonbury festival to promote keeping our oceans clean.
